Jailbreaking is a process that opens up the iPhone's or iPod Touch's OS to installing applications not purchased or downloaded from Apples official application store.

Well probably not jail but if Apple has its way, in some sort of legal trouble. I saw this over at easy iphone jailbreak Wireds Threat Level blog. Apparently Apple is asserting that hacking the phone to run non-approved applications violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

(For the record, I havent jailbroken my iPhone but I do see the attraction. I mainly dont want to deal with the issues that hacking my phone might have on its functionality.)

Apple has always been very keen on protecting its property - some would say to the point of being a bully. In this case, it puts the company up against a community of software developers and users who would prefer everything to be open.

This means you can get apps that do things like allow you to use your iPhone as a 3G modem for your laptop or a host of other things that Apple and AT&T dont approve of. Jailbroken phones also can be moved from AT&T to other wireless carriers.

So heres the question: Since Apple built the iPhone, should they be able to tell you what easy iphone jailbreak you can and cant do once youve bought it? Or are we merely renting this device along with our AT&T service plan?
Despite the confluence of promising signs, write Peter Eavis and Jessica Silver-Greenberg today, little in the vast system that provides Americans with mortgages has returned to normal since the 2008 financial crisis, leaving a large swath of people virtually shut out of the market.

This is absolutely true, and its a significant problem. To get a feel for just how sluggish the mortgage market is, my favorite chart comes from the Mortgage Bankers Association. Every month, the MBA releases its Mortgage Credit Availability Index, which makes it easy to concentrate on minuscule differences: in December, for instance, the index rose to 100.9, from 110.2 in November. But in order to see the big picture you need to zoom out and look at what credit availability was like before the financial crisis. And if you do that, the chart looks something like this:

Screen Shot 2014-01-15 at 11.49.43 AM.png

Of course, mortgage availability was way too lax in 2006-7, and the new index doesnt have historical data going back before the end of 2010, so we cant really see what was normal before things went crazy. But anecdotally, its much harder to get a mortgage now than it used to be. In the NYT article, the Center for American Progresss Julia Gordon says that a typical American family with a credit score in the low 700s is being left out: thats a very long way from subprime, which is what youre considered to be when your credit score is below 620.

Meanwhile, here in Manhattan, no one in my condo building has been able to sell or refinance for the past couple of years, thanks to an ever-shifting series of rules at various different banks, all of which are clearly designed to just give them a reason to say no.

Why are banks so reluctant to lend? Its not because of new rules about qualified mortgages, or anything regulatory at all, really. Instead, its much simpler:

To put it another way, would you lend money fixed for the next 30 years at a rate of less than 5%? Mortgage rates might still be well above the rates on mortgage bonds, but on an absolute basis, theyre still incredibly low. If you hold the loan to maturity, youre never going to make very much money, and if you mark it to market, you run the risk of substantial losses if interest rates move back up to more historically-normal levels.

On top of that, the mortgage business is consolidating even more than the banking business more generally, with Wells Fargo being the big whale. It has the scale and the financial technology to manage all the risks and the regulations, as well as a big enough balance sheet that it can easily cope with being forced to repurchase loans it is currently selling. Most smaller banks have essentially zero competitive advantage over Wells, and it can make a lot of sense for them to get out of the game entirely, as Joe Garrett says:

One of the great myths of our industry is that a mortgage is the foundational product for consumer relationships. With many people having their mortgage payment automatically taken from their checking account, a significant number of borrowers dont even know who their mortgage lender is. And mortgage borrowers are much more interested in getting the lowest rate than in getting a mortgage from their primary bank.

There are many commercial banks that do just fine not offering mortgages. Some offer it through a private-label mortgage company. Some refer borrowers to local mortgage bankers, and most simply dont offer it. Mortgage banking does not generate deposits from customers, and to the extent that customer deposits are a major part of what makes a franchise valuable, mortgage banking does not help.

I cannot think of a single banker who was ever criticized for getting out of mortgage banking, but there are plenty who stayed in too long and lost their job and even lost their bank. Yes, mortgage banking can be very lucrative when times are good, but bank executives must know when to cut back, and they must also have the courage to simply exit this business when it no longer adds value to the bank and its franchise.

There are a few possible solutions to this problem, none of which are particularly hopeful. One is to simply wait for mortgage rates to rise back to say 6.5%, at which point a lot more lenders will start coming out of the woodwork. Another is to phase out the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage entirely, since its a product no private-sector financial institution would ever offer, were it not for the distorting influence of Fannie and Freddie. Both solutions would probably be accompanied by a decline in house prices, which no one wants right now. And then of course theres the risk of overshoot that if conditions loosen up, that will only serve to precipitate another bad-loan crisis.

Still, one thing is clear: for all that the Fed has been pumping billions of dollars into mortgage securities as part of its quantitative easing campaign, all that liquidity has failed to find its way to new homebuyers. Im in general a believer in renting rather than buying, but the US is a nation of homeowners, and in such a country, a liquid housing market is a necessary precondition for economic vitality. Right now, we dont have one and we dont have much hope of getting one in the foreseeable future, either.

A Candy Theme Bat Mitzvah is a Sweet Idea!

The Centerpieces

Table centerpieces can cost a fortune, but with a confectionary theme, this will not be the case. For the centerpieces, buy inexpensive vases at yard sales or at craft stores with coupons. Each table will be named for a different candy, and that is what you will fill up the vase with. For example, the Milky Way table will be filled with Milky Way bars, the gumdrops will be filled with gumdrops, etc.

In order to keep the cost of the sweets down, look out for the 50-75 per cent sales after all major holidays. Since you know the theme in advance, you can ask others to help you on your quest for cheap candy. Another option for inexpensive goodies is to look online for companies that sell them in bulk.

In order to make the centerpieces more festive, you can have balloons coming from the center. The balloons can fit the color scheme of the wrapper.

You can also have small dishes of candy on the table for noshing. Personalized M&M's are another fun option that fits the theme.

Table Place Cards

This is an easy prop for yourBat Mitzvah theme. You can use candy bars with wrappers telling the guests at which table they will be sitting. There are many online companies that will do this for you.

Sign In Book or Sign In Board

At many Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, there is a sign in book or sign in board. You can create both of them on your own using binders or poster board. You can purchase candy stickers at craft stores or online.

Some of the giveawaysfor the DJto dispense at your party can be candy necklaces and bracelets, bracelets, personalized lollipops or twisty pops, gummy lips, roll tape gum, and Pez dispensers.

The ING spokeswoman said: "People who use their iPhones in a regular way have nothing to fear."

The case, which was widely reported by security experts on Monday, is the first in which iPhones have been recruited into a "botnet," or army of infected devices that hackers can control from a central "command and control center."

In July the company issued a software patch to fix a critical bug uncovered by two researchers that made the device susceptible to secret attacks using the SMS system, which mobile devices use to send text messages.

Since then, security researchers say that a limited number of Conficker-infected PCs have been used to spread spam, sell fake anti-virus software and perpetrate identity theft.

Mikko Hypponen, an expert on Conficker and chief research officer for security software maker F-Secure, said that Duh could spread from the Netherlands to other countries.

To be sure, iPhones that have not been jail broken face their own security challenges. Yet so far Apple has been able to stay ahead of the hackers.

"It's clearly written to make money. That's a first on the mobile side," Hypponen said.

Like the authors of Conficker, the hackers who wrote Duh are motivated to spread the worm because they too are free iphone jailbreaker looking for a payoff from their work, he said.

For example, Apple prevents users from switching service providers to unauthorized carriers and limits users to the approximately 100,000 programs that the company has vetted for installation on the device. There are thousands of unauthorized programs covering areas including Internet phone calls, WiFi access and pornography.

"The vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones, and for good reason. These hacks not only violate the warranty, they will also cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably," said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Harrison.

ING has not received any reports from clients that their credentials have been lost, but the bank was monitoring client accounts for suspicious transactions, the spokeswoman said.

Apple shares rose 3 percent on Monday to $205.88 on the Nasdaq.

The virus has been detected in the Netherlands and can only attack iPhones whose users have disabled some pre-installed security features, according to analysts monitoring the progress of the virus.

"They're leaving their back door open. Every one else knows what the key is to open that door," Cluley said.

(Additional reporting by Harro ten Wolde in Amsterdam; Editing by Phil Berlowitz and Steve jailbreak free software Orlofsky)

The hackers are trying to use the virus to obtain passwords to banking sites, according to Graham Cluley, a researcher with anti-virus software maker Sophos. When an iPhone user tries to access a bank website, the Duh Worm directs the browser to a look-a-like site controlled by the hackers, Cluley said.

Early this year an unknown criminal gang built a botnet with millions of PCs using a worm known as Conficker. Security researchers feared that it might wreak havoc on April 1 based on code in the worm's software, but that date passed with little fanfare.

The only iPhones that are vulnerable to the Duh Worm are "jail broken" phones, where users disable key Apple security features to get around the terms of usage agreement that they are designed to enforce, analysts said.

Three independent security experts said that it is best for iPhone users not to jail break their devices because the security risks are greater than the benefits.

A spokeswoman for ING Group said the Dutch banking giant discovered a criminal network that attempted to steal banking credentials via hacked iPhones. Dutch clients of ING have been targeted, but there was no indication that clients outside the Netherlands have to worry, she said.

BOSTON Hackers have built a virus that attacks Apple Inc's iPhone by secretly taking control of the devices via their Internet connections, security experts said.
Underdog presidential candidates spend heavily to catch up

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders continued to outpace rival Hillary Clinton in fundraising -- and spending -- last month, new Federal Election Commission filings show.

Sanders' record March haul of almost $46 million topped Clinton by about $19 million. Yet he vaporized that cash advantage by spending roughly $17 million more than she did. Sanders shared the numbers on his campaign website, but his report wasn't available through the FEC by early Thursday.

While racking up wins in recent primary states, except New York this week, Sanders has failed to nudge Clinton off her apparent path to the party's presidential nomination.

She began April with $29 million, and he with $17 million.

On the Republican side, front-runner Donald Trump offered his biggest campaign loan yet: $11.5 million. That made up the bulk of his $13.8 million in March spending, and brought his total personal campaign investment to about $36 million.

Meanwhile, his two GOP rivals struggled to keep pace financially.

Other highlights from the filings:

Ohio Gov. John Kasich scored a must-win primary in his home state last month, but the victory only modestly helped his campaign coffers. He raised $4.5 million in March, only about $1 million more than the previous month.

That's despite his assertion that he's the most electable Republican in a general election. Donors don't appear to see that as enough of a reason to give.

The main outside group working to help him also fared relatively poorly, filings show. The super PAC New Day for America brought in $2.8 million in March -- even less than it raised a month earlier, before his Ohio win.

Six-figure backers included hedge fund manager Stanley Druckenmiller, who gave $400,000. Quicken Loans founder and chairman Dan Gilbert and hedge fund manager David Tepper, president of Appaloosa Management L.P., both gave $250,000.

New Day had $1.2 million cash on hand as this month began, while Kasich's campaign had about $1 million.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who was denied any delegates Tuesday in the New York primary, continued to romp Kasich when it comes to fundraising, taking in $12.5 million in March.

Like Kasich, Cruz cannot win the GOP nomination outright; however, he has amassed far more delegates than the governor, putting him in a stronger position if the nominee is chosen this summer at a contested convention.

Cruz's campaign spent almost as much as it brought in last month, largely on television advertisements and prospecting for new donors. Even so, Cruz began April with about $8.8 million cash on hand.

Cruz can also count on a bevy of super PACs that continue to rake in new dollars.

Missouri-based Herzog Contracting Corp, an asphalt and pavement contractor founded by Bill Herzog, donated $1 million, and so did Richard Uihlein, CEO of shipping supply distributor Uline Inc.

In addition, Cruz's top financial supporter, hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer, ponied up another $2 million in March, bringing his total investment in Cruz's efforts to $13.5 million.

Trusted Leadership and three of the most active groups it is synced with began April with $11.6 million left in the bank, FEC filings show.

Our Principles PAC, a group established solely to oppose Trump's presidential run, brought in about $8.4 million including a $200,000 donation from the Cruz-aligned Keep the Promise I super PAC, which is funded by Mercer.

Other six- and seven-figure checks came from hedge fund investors Paul Singer and Cliff Asness, who had backed Marco Rubio's 2016 bid. Cruz supporter Uihlein gave $2 million.

The group was initially funded with a million-dollar investment from the Ricketts family, whose patriarch founded TD Ameritrade. They've now given $4.5 million.

But Our Principles quickly tore through that money, spending more than $11.2 million in March and ending the month with just under $425,00s0 cash on hand. The group's filing shows that the bulk of the money went into anti-Trump ads, research and voter contact.

On the Democratic side, an outside group helping Clinton is looking ahead to the general election, even as Sanders remains in the primary.

Priorities USA, a super PAC that says it plans to pour $125 million into ads supporting Clinton, reported taking in $11.7 million in March, bringing the group's total haul this election cycle to more than $67 million.

So far, data from Kantar Media's advertising tracker show the group has reserved more than $64 million in television ads scheduled to air from Aug. 2 through the day before the general election.

The group also said it will start airing other TV ads in June and plans to spend heavily on digital advertising to support Clinton and attack Cruz and Trump.

At the start of April, Priorities reported more than $44 million cash on hand. A group spokesman also says it has lined up an additional $49 million in "commitments" from wealthy donors.

Ben Carson may have dropped out of the race for president on March 4, but his campaign kept right on paying political consultants.

According to FEC filings, Carson spent $157,000 on political strategy consulting and an additional $103,000 on travel for his political consultants in the weeks after he ended his bid. The campaign also spent an additional $39,000 on travel for various employees and consultants and reported spending on payroll right up until March 31.

The spending continued a trend uncovered last month by The Associated Press. Carson, who raised more than $63 million this election cycle, paid at least $16 million to fundraising and marketing firms owned by a pair of his top consultants, the AP found.

And federal filings show the campaign was still sitting on a considerable amount of cash. At the end of March, Carson America reported $3.4 million in cash on hand. That's more than Kasich, who remains in the race.

I've been sharing ideas lately on how to prepare your daughter for her first period. One of the important elements is a first period kit, a nice box with an assortment of products for her to familiarize herself with.

The first period kit can be a great way for your daughter to get comfortable with her many options. Single dads in particular may feel overwhelmed assembling the kit, but the key is mainly to have a good assortment of options.

Products you might consider for the box include:

Menstrual pads from various brands and in various shapes, with and without wingsTampons (look for ones marketed for girls and buy the smallest possible)Panty liners (look for unscented, as scented may cause irritation)Alternative products such as cloth pads, sea sponges and/or a Diva CupProducts for pain relief such as a microwaveable rice pad and/or a pain reliever like Midol

You can often find free samples to help fill that box. The last time I shared free samples for girls' first period kits, there were nine different offers online for pads, tampons and panty liners. Right now, there are fewer offered, but companies are continually offering them up again.

As of this writing, Tampax is offering a free sample of its Tampax Pearl plastic tampon here, for instance. Here's an example of another of its recent giveaways with Always pads (which recently ended) that was marketed specifically towards teen girls.

Here's an example of a typical sample pack from Kotex, with one ultra-thin pad with wings and two panty liners. This particular giveaway is over as of this writing and they are currently offering a free "I know" bracelet instead.

Most of the major brands of disposable feminine products offer free samples regularly. They sometimes offer kits specifically for girls who are just starting their periods. You can sign up for these companies' mailing lists, follow them on Facebook or just visit periodically to keep an eye out for offers.

Sites to check regularly include:

Obviously, these are all mainstream products. You or your daughter might also want newer or more natural types of menstrual products in the kit, such as a menstrual cup, cloth pads, organic tampons or sea sponge tampons.

You can find some of these products in your area through natural food stores and similar businesses. There are thousands of places around the web to order these via mail, as well. See How to help prepare your daughter for her first period for lots of links to natural and alternative products. Many women and girls report that cloth pads are more comfortable and even inexplicably reduce cramping, and many others swear by the Diva Cup. Talk to your daughter about these options as well as the mainstream products.

Also keep in mind that you and your daughter may have very different ideas about what products would be best for her. You may prefer perfumed maxi-pads and she may prefer organic tampons, or you may be a die-hard cloth kind of mama and the very idea may horrify your daughter.

The better the assortment of products for your daughter to familiarize herself with, the more prepared she'll feel for the day her period arrives and the more choices she'll have to find what works best for her.

To make money blogging, you will first need to understand the Internet's current landscape. Content might be king, but it's also becoming quite overwhelming. When it comes to creating content, you need to focus not only on the value of what you producebut also how you are going to promote it.

Below, we are going to look at three of the most effective ways to make money blogging in 2016. Each of these methods will help you build out your content, target your audience and get people to convert to a revenue model once they hit your site.

Google is the largest search engine in the world. They make billions of dollars every year from advertisers who want to appear at the top of their search results. Google AdSense is based on this same principle. Through their AdSense program, Google is able to display this type of advertising on millions of other sites, giving the site owner a small percentage of the advertiser revenue.

This method works so well for two reasons: It's extremely simple to set up, and only relevant advertisements will be displayed on your site (based off of the written content). For a new site owner or blogger, Google AdSense is the easiest way to make money online. You only need to place a simple line of code on your site to start serving banner ads. Google does the rest.

While the process is dead simple for anyone to implement on their site, this is also factored into the compensation from Google AdSense (which isn't publicly displayed, but guessed to be around 20-30 percent).

Affiliate marketing has been one of the greatest ways for both site owners and online businesses to generate money online. The concept is simple in that you (the site owner or affiliate marketer) earn a commission every time a referred lead or sale comes from your site. This model also works out very well for the brand or business, simply because you are only paying for legitimate leads or sales to your site.

For site owners and bloggers, affiliate marketing works extremely well because you can pick and choose the different products or services you want to promote. Amazon.com was one of the very first affiliate programs out there. As an affiliate of Amazon, you could promote any product on their site and earn a commission from all referred sales -- never having to deal with customer payments, process orders or even hold any inventory.

No matter what product or service your site is catered to, there is a good chance you can find a relevant affiliate program to join and promote to your audience. The more relevant your affiliate promotions are to your audience, the more likely they are to convert.

Creating Your Own Product

Google AdSense and affiliate marketing are two very effective ways to make money with a site of your own. However, if you want to wipe out the advertiser margins and middleman, creating a product or service is the best way to go.

You don't need a physical product or even a team of employees to make this happen. Some of the most successful sites in the world sell ebooks, guides, consulting, video courses and much more. They are all easy to create and offer to your audience with immediate downloads.

Whether you are a site owner or blogger, content is also going to be the most important aspect of your business. After all, it's why people come to your site in the first place. The quality of your content isdefined by how well you cater value to your audience. Once you have the content in place, it's time to examine your monetization methods. The better you can implement relevant monetization within your content, the better results you'll see.

New Trends, New Ideas

A new trend is beginning to emerge in today's modern world, thanks to the Internet. This trend is beginning to show that people are beginning to write to companies for free products. Over the past few months, I have encountered "The 39 Dollar Experiment", and other websites and blogs that tell us of their results in writing to companies. Thousands of people are reporting great results by writing to companies, and learn that you don't have to participate in spammy surveys or websites to receive samples. You don't have to spend one penny on writing to them either.

As outrageous as this may seem, results tell us that it really does work. You simply write a letter or email to a company's customer service and they could possibly send you some samples. The chances of you receiving samples is relatively high, provided you know who to write to. I have written to many companies and some companies were pretty cross about me writing to them and refused rather bluntly but the rest sent free samples and full-sized products.

This kind of activity has always been kept a secret, only the lucky few knew that writing to companies for some free samples would get them results. I am here to expose the truths and how to best tackle the letter.

Based on the facts above, it is relatively easy to write to companies for free products. This guide will teach you how exactly to do so, how to write the email or letter, what companies to write to and the results to my experiment.

Why Do Companies Send Samples Anyway?

Most blogs and websites have reported that they have received the most free samples from cosmetics and makeup companies. Why is this?

Manufacturing samples and even full-sized cosmetics is relatively cheap for the company so they can easily afford to send samples to those that ask.You may want to try out the latest product of theirs, but ask for a sample to 'try before you buy'. If you like the sample, chances are you will probably buy the product afterwards and maybe recommend it to family and friends. This will boost profits for the company and generate more sales.Cosmetic companies generally include samples of their latest products when you order online and purchase some items. These samples are stocked and ready to be shipped if someone writes to them asking to try out a couple of their products.

If you ever try writing to companies for free stuff, I would recommend writing to cosmetics/personal care companies because they are the most likely to send samples.
